Our history
Originally opened in 1922, "Jerry's" restaurant was located at 2122 Tulane at the corner of Galvez. After serving up great food and good times, it was eventually sold to Mrs. Anita's Son who lovingly changed the name to Anitas Grill. After being in business nearly 40 years, He sold the restaurant to Mr. Bobby Wise and Arnold McCormick, two lifetime natives of New Orleans. Mr. Bobby and Mr. Arnold, took Anita's Grill to the next level, remodeling the old diner and giving it a fresh look, but never changing the original menu. Known for their good food and quick service, they were challenged in 2005 being in the direct path of Hurricane Katrina. After taking nearly 8-10 feet of water in the restaurant, Mr. Arnold leaned heavy on his Son Sean McCormick, a Deputy Chief with Slidell Fire Department to help put the restaurant back together. After hard work and determination, Anita's Grill once again opened its doors exactly 1 year after Hurricane Katrina. Fast forward to 2024, after having its toughest 2 years with the Pandemic, Mr. Arnold made the hard decision to shut Anita's Grill down, after being the only building left on the city block. The original building was demolished by LSU Health Systems to make way for expansion. Within one week of Anita's Grill being shut down, Sean's phone began ringing, emails pouring in, and local news stations reaching out for stories about the history and fall of The World Famous Anita's Grill. Sean knew that this was a sign to reopen the restaurant as it has survived over 100 years of the best and toughest times. Sean reached out to his lifelong friend Alan Novak, (also a Captain with Slidell Fire) and the two put together a plan to bring back the diner. Within 2 short months, Alan & Sean secured the historic and iconic Howard Building at 833 Howard Avenue. Determined to bring back the diner, The two of them agreed that while the building and equipment may be all new... the menu would remain the same. Set to open July 1st 2025, New Orleans is ready to welcome back The World Famous Anita's Grill Nola!
